REQUIEM galaxy featured as NASA/ESA Picture of the Week!

One of the targets in the REQUIEM galaxy survey, MRG-M0138 (originally discovered by Dr. Andrew Newman), was featured in NASA/ESA’s Picture of the Week feature. This remarkable ‘red and dead’ galaxy is magnified via strong gravitational lensing, appearing as a giant red arc across the sky. Quiescent galaxies are very massive and thus also quite rare in number, so to find them in the right orientation such that nature magnifies their light is even more rare. One of the major goals of the REQUIEM survey is to continue to build up samples of similar such galaxies, so we are always on the hunt for more!
